The Cape Illuminated
Day 1 – Cape Town
Welcome to the Mother City. Welcome to your Cape Photo Tour. We start with a bang (literally, we witness the famous noon gun being fired from its perch above the city). After settling into you accommodation and a introductory (lazy) lunch we spend the rest of the 1st day “focussing” on The Mountain…
The lazy lunch is followed by a lazy trip up Table Mountain on the cableway, and then a not so lazy full moon hike up Lions Head to capture the most iconic views of the mountain, city bowl and Atlantic seaboard.
Please note: Alternative options to the Full Moon Hike are available for less athletic guests. Many of the activities on this tour are weather dependent. Generally, where weather makes it impossible to complete an activity we will try to fit it onto another tour day or you will be refunded for that activity if it is a paid activity.
Day 2 – Cape Town
We start the day with an (optional) twilight/sunrise photowalk from Blouwbergstrand shooting back over the bay to Table Mountain. All sunrise sessions on this tour are optional, as you may wish to sleep a little later on some days but I would recommend you join this one as the views are epic.
The day follows at a gentle pace, we visit the Waterfront, explore Kalk Bay Harbour and the beaches and tidal pools between at Muizenberg and Simonstown. We visit the penguins at Boulders Beach in the late afternoon and shoot sunset/twilight images from the famous Chapmans Peak Pass.
Day 3 – Cape Town to Cape Agulhas
The day begins with an (optional) twilight/sunrise photowalk on the beach or hillside overlooking the city bowl.
After a slow breakfast we travel the scenic route out of Cape Town, heading south east and hugging the spectacular coastline via Clarens Drive. We stop often to stretch our legs and shoot the scenery, and also for a long lazy lunch with a view. Our final destination for the day is Cape Agulhas, on the southern tip of the African continent.
Once checked into the evenings accommodation you will have time to explore the quaint town, and visit the viewpoint at the southern tip. As the sun sets and fades to twilight we shoot images along the rugged coastline and/or of the lighthouse.
Day 4 – Cape Agulhas to Knysna
The day begins with an (optional) twilight/sunrise photowalk on the rugged coastline or at nearby Struisbaai harbour.
Today is our longest driving day at approximately 400km’s so we leave Agulhas and the Overberg after breakfast and head towards The Garden Route. We will stop for lunch with a view en-route, and arrive in Knysna in the early afternoon. After checking into your accommodation you will have some free time to explore the Knysna Waterfront or do some poolside lounging.
In the late afternoon we depart for a Sunset Sail on the Knysna Estuary aboard a stylish single hull sailing yacht. If the weather allows will sail through the famous Knysna Heads and into the Indian Ocean where dolphin and whale sightings are a possibility depending on the time of year.
Day 5 – Knysna
The twilight/sunrise photowalk locations in The Garden Route are endless. You have the option to shoot sandy beaches, sheer ocean facing cliffs or placid lagoon scenes as the sun rises this morning.
After breakfast the activities for the day include either a canoe paddle into the deep ravines near Wilderness, followed by a hike through indigenous forest to a waterfall or a day spent in the company of animals or birds while visiting Plettenberg Bay and one of the nearby ethical animal experiences.
Either way, you will have a couple of hours of free time in the afternoon before heading out for a spectacular sunset session at either Brenton or Buffalo Bay. After the sun has set and the light faded you have the choice of joining me for a beachside braai (barbeque) or visiting one of the excellent local restaurants for your dinner.
Day 6 – Knysna – Prince Albert
Choose endless sandy beaches, ocean rock pools or leading lines on the lagoon for your optional sunrise photowalk session this morning…
After breakfast and checking out of our accommodation we venture into the deep indigenous forest, taking an easy walk through the ancient forest to a secluded waterfall and natural rock pool. Bring your ND filters and shoot the water cascading, or shoot macro landscapes of the amazing plant life. Either way, the walk will rejuvenate your body and soul.
We then start heading inland, towards the Little Karoo. Traveling over the Outeniqua mountain range and into the semi desert of the land beyond. We stop en-route for lunch and then visit the world renown Cango Caves. After the cave experience, as the sun starts to get a little lower and shadows start to lengthen we will traverse the legendary Swartberg Pass, stopping regularly to shoot the amazing views.
Day 7 – Prince Albert
We shoot the lower slopes of the Swartberg Pass on the Prince Albert side for the optional sunrise session today.
After a leisurely breakfast we explore the local countryside a little. Think endless open spaces, big sky, gravel roads disappearing into the shimmering horizon and the most exquisite muted palette your lenses have encountered. We visit a local farm where we walk a short labrinth and enjoy a traditional picnic.
The afternoon on the last day is traditionally spent working through some of the images shot, doing a little post production, and taking things as easily as possible. Alternatively, you may wish to stroll through the beautiful village of Prince Albert, or visit a Donkey Sanctuary, or just lounge around the pool.
As the sun sets, we return to the country roads to shoot some more spectacular Karoo scenery. We dine at one of the amazing restaurants in Prince Albert
Day 8 – George and Farewell
We take in one final sunrise session if you are up for it this morning, the last on your Cape Photo Tour. Possibly a dirt road disappearing into a sunwashed horizon, or a creaking windmill silhouetted on the horizon.
After a leisurely breakfast (and depending on the time of your departing flights from George) we head slowly back to the coast, George and the airport for your return flights.
